I know there are a lot of people who believe that debt is a sin. I have to go by what God’s Word says. The Bible doesn’t say that debt is a sin. It also doesn’t say that borrowing or lending is a sin. But, debt is not God’s best for us.
We are cautioned in Proverbs 22:7 that “the borrower is slave to the lender”. Being in debt puts you in a slave/master relationship with your creditor.
Think about it: Jesus came to earth and died to set you free. I can’t believe he would come to set us free from sin, and then want us to be slaves to debt.
Paul tells us in Romans 13:8 to owe no man anything but love.
In Deuteronomy 28:12 and Matthew 5:42 we are told that we are to lend and not borrow.
God wants to bless us — not only so that we might have life and have it more abundantly — but so that we can be a blessing to others.
Imagine the joy of not just being debt free, but of having enough in your bank account so that you can purchase the groceries for the single mom in front of you at the checkout stand trying to juggle kids, groceries and finances in what seems like a losing battle.
No, debt isn’t a sin, but it isn’t what we want, and it isn’t what God wants for His children.
